How
To Perform the Diagnose This Computer Procedure
If
you have not already installed
Station Administrator, install it from your
Timeslips CD-ROM using the Custom installation
option and selecting only Station Administrator.
If you are using Timeslips v9.0, then you must
reinstall SR11.
What Diagnose
This Computer Does
When the command
is first
selected, it performs an analysis of your system
and attempts to fix any problems it
finds. Errors are reported in the Diagnose This
Computer dialog box that follows the
analysis. Here are the tests & fixes it
performs during the startup:
- Tests if BDE can be initialized
If not, BDE is improperly installed and a
warning is added to the Database Engine section
of the Diagnose This Computer dialog box.
When you use the Fix button, you are given
instructions to reinstall BDE32. The Fix function
actually deletes elements of the registry
associated with BDE to allow reinstallation
a better chance to work.
Note that this only applies to BDE 32, not
BDE 16. Diagnose doesn't support BDE 16 issues.
- Validates BDE version
For v9, it must find BDE 4.5.1 or higher.
For v9.1, it must find BDE 5.0.1 or higher.
BDE
v5.1.0 is valid and reports no error although
the Data Verification system will offer less
repair capabilities with this version installed.
If not valid, a warning is added to the
Database Engine section of the Diagnose This
Computer dialog box. The Fix button takes
the
same actions as in #1.
- Local Share option in the BDE
configuration file is set to ‘No’.
If it cannot set it, the BDE
configuration data is corrupted and a warning
is added to the Database Engine
Configuration File section of the Diagnose
This Computer dialog box. The Fix button
deletes your BDE Configuration file and deletes
elements of the registry associated with
BDE to allow reinstallation a better chance
to work. Then it tells you to reinstall BDE32.
- Max File Handles option in the
BDE configuration file is set to 80 if it
is less then 80. If it cannot set
it,
the BDE configuration data is corrupted and
a warning is added to the Database Engine
Configuration File section of the Diagnose
This Computer dialog box. The Fix button takes
the same actions as in #3.
- Removes Pdoxusrs.lck,
Pdoxusrs.net, and Paradox.lck files
from your Temp folder, the current Timeslips
database folder (as determined by the main
window of Station Administrator), and the
folder where Timeslips is originally installed.
If any are found but fail to delete, they
are most likely open and in use by a program
that uses the Timeslips database. If any are
left over, a warning is added to the Paradox
Issues section of the Diagnose This Computer
dialog box. The Fix button tells you to reboot
and try again or delete the files manually.
- Checks the version of VREDIR.VXD
in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and makes
sure that it is newer then version 4.00.1114.
If an older one is found, a warning is added
to the Operating System section of the
Diagnose This Computer dialog box. The Fix
button tells you how to get an updated
VREDIR.VXD.
Note: Learn more about this
problem on the Microsoft web site:http://www.microsoft.com/
- If the OS is Windows 95 or 98,
it changes the registry key System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VREDIR
DiscardCacheOnOpen to a value of 1.
This is associated with getting VREDIR.VXD
to
work.
- In v9.1, sets BDE configuration
options to better utilize RAM available.
This is done to improve performance.
The
Diagnose This Computer dialog box
also contains the Change Operating System
Settings button. Click this if
data corruption is happening in
Once selected, a dialog box appears
with operating system specific instructions
and a checkbox. When the checkbox is marked,
the operating system has been setup with a caching
feature enabled. Unmark to turn off
system caching. However, if this change doesn't
result in stopping data corruption, return
here to turn system caching back on.
The Change OS Settings button doesn't
do anything for a Novell server. Once you
close the Diagnose This
Computer dialog box, you may be prompted to
reboot your computer if any registry settings
where changed by #7 or the Change OS Settings
button.
